LYRICS [ENGLISH TRANSLATION]

(This translation is taken from book in English by Darshan Singh Maini called STUDIES IN PUNJABI POETRY)

I say to Waris Shah today, speak from your grave
And add a new page to your book of love

Once one daughter of Punjab wept, and you wrote your long saga;
Today thousands weep, calling to you Waris Shah:

Arise, o friend of the afflicted; arise and see the state of Punjab,
Corpses strewn on fields, and the Chenaab flowing with much blood.

Someone filled the five rivers with poison,
And this same water now irrigates our soil.

Where was lost the flute, where the songs of love sounded?
And all Ranjha’s brothers forgotten to play the flute.

Blood has rained on the soil, graves are oozing with blood,
The princesses of love cry their hearts out in the graveyards.

Today all the Quaido’ns have become the thieves of love and beauty,
Where can we find another one like Waris Shah?

Waris Shah! I say to you, speak from your grave
And add a new page to your book of love.

first of all congratulation for collecting all the treasure of subcontinent…
i really want to comment on dear iftikhar point of view! that this devision of pakistan/india has only happened 50 years ago or so,
The great poet or kalam we all enjoying was born in subcontinent centuries ago…
so try not to separate them by saying india or pakistan.
i hope i was able to convey my message that to see people as what they are rather then seeing them from where they are!
    thank you

I am a punjabi poet and have dedicated my book to Amrita Pritam Jee. I am big fan of her poetry and intellectualism. Few weeaks before I was invited India to participate in SAARC YOUNG POETS SEMINAR in Delhi and Orisa. After the seminar I went to see the Imroz (the life partner of Amrita Pritam Jee and stayed continiously for three days at the Amrita Pritam’s home. I had chance to view the library of Amrita Jee and the artwork of the Imroz Jee. It was a dreamy experience for me and am feeling lucky one for having this great chance.
